One of the most cherished bonds there is, is that between you and your dog. Always there to shower you with love, be fiercely loyal beyond measure and, from time to time, have you in fits of laughter, your devoted canine companion will never leave your side.
Although they can, admittedly, test your patience at times as they traipse mud across your freshly hoovered carpets, dogs are called man’s best friend for a reason, and you wouldn’t have them any other way. How many of these can you relate to?
1. There are certain types of dog. One is food obsessed…
These dogs live for food. They spend most of their waking hours sniffing out crumbs and leftovers to eat, hoping beyond hope that one day you’ll accidentally leave a whole roasted chicken in their accessible reach. Heaven.
2. And the other is ball or stick obsessed
These are the dogs whose entire existence is centred on chasing an object. They drop sticks at your feet, stare at you eagle-eyed and wait for you to perform your duty. If you take too long, they might even try their luck at the heels of a stranger.
3. They are always over the moon to see you
Whether you’ve been apart for just an hour or an entire week, their soggy noses greet you as if it’s been a lifetime. Tail-wagging, nuzzling, full-blown leaps and face-licking included, you just have to hope you’re not carrying anything fragile.
4. And then come the laps of honour…
When filled with happiness and excitement, our dogs need to release this surge of emotional energy. So, obviously, they run around in circles in the garden, up and down the stairs, in the dining room whilst you’re laying your best China – where ever the mood takes them.
5. You send your life making sure they don’t eat out of the bin… or drink from the toilet
However delicious, organic and nutritious the food you put in their designated bowl, the bin is always much more appealing. Hopefully, you trained them out of this behaviour early on in their puppy days but, every now and again, you’ll catch them sinking their head straight into that forbidden place. (Let’s not mention them licking the plates clean in the dishwasher…)
6. Having said that, they are helpful hoovers
There’s no need to worry about that bread crust you just dropped. Your dog will have vacuumed that up before you’ve even noticed, helping you keep your floors nice and clean.
7. You know exactly what that head tilt means
Like butter wouldn’t melt. But, as they tilt their head in that adorable, ponderous manner, you know they are trying to tell you that they care. Science has proved it.
8. You have your own double act routine… and you daren’t break it
Meal times are automatically ingrained into dogs’ minds. Even if you are 10 minutes late to fill up their bowl, they will pace restlessly and give you that look.
9. You discuss your dog with your other pet-loving friends
Forget book club, it’s all about dog club. You share stories, pictures and anecdotes and reminisce about when they were pups. Maybe you should get another?
10. But you secretly know that yours is a tail above the rest
He can’t help it that his coat is a bit shinier, his eyes are a bit brighter, and he is generally more effortlessly cute. You can, though, and you do your best to help keep him that way – happy and healthy.
In conclusion, with all their funny idiosyncrasies, we couldn’t love our dogs more. Man’s, women’s, child’s, family’s and teddy bear’s best friend, indeed.
