Chester Bennington, Linkin Park Singer, Is Dead at 41

Chester Bennington, the ferocious lead singer for the platinum-selling hard rock band Linkin Park, was found dead in his home near Los Angeles on Thursday. He was 41.

Brian Elias, the chief of operations for the Los Angeles County coroner’s office, confirmed the death, in Palos Verdes Estates, and said it was being investigated as a possible suicide after law enforcement authorities responded to a call shortly after 9 a.m.

Mr. Bennington, who was known for his piercing scream and free-flowing anguish, released seven albums with Linkin Park. The most recent, “One More Light,” arrived in May and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart. The band was scheduled to start a tour with a concert on July 27 in Mansfield, Mass.

Mike Shinoda, one of Linkin Park’s founders, spoke on behalf of the group in a tweet. “Shocked and heartbroken,” he wrote, adding that the band would issue a statement.

Mr. Bennington also performed in a side project, Dead by Sunrise, and joined Stone Temple Pilots as its lead singer after the band split with the vocalist Scott Weiland in 2013.

In May, he responded to the suicide by hanging of his friend the singer Chris Cornell in a note he shared on social media. “I can’t imagine a world without you in it,” he wrote. “I pray you find peace in the next life.” (Mr. Bennington also performed Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” at Mr. Cornell’s funeral. Mr. Cornell would have turned 53 on Thursday.)

A week later, he posted a series of positive tweets, including one about being artistically inspired: “Feeling very creative this last week. I’ve written 6 songs and I’m happy with all of them. Just getting started.” He added the emoji for the devil-horns hand gesture.

But Mr. Bennington had been open about his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction, which had fueled many of his biggest hits with Linkin Park.

“I have been able to tap into all the negative things that can happen to me throughout my life by numbing myself to the pain, so to speak, and kind of being able to vent it through my music,” he said in a 2009 interview with the website Noisecreep. “I don’t have a problem with people knowing that I had a drinking problem. That’s who I am, and I’m kind of lucky in a lot of ways ′cause I get to do something about it.”

On “Crawling” — one of the band’s defining singles from its debut album, “Hybrid Theory,” which went on to sell more than 11 million copies in the United States — Mr. Bennington sings: “There’s something inside me that pulls beneath the surface / Consuming, confusing / This lack of self-control I fear is never ending.”

The song, he said later, was “about feeling like I had no control over myself in terms of drugs and alcohol.”

“That feeling,” he added, “being able to write about it, sing about it, that song, those words sold millions of records, I won a Grammy, I made a lot of money.”

Still, as the group’s career progressed, Mr. Bennington was adamant that he would remain transparent in his music about his personal ups and downs. The recording studio, he told Rock Sound, “is not a safe place for me to be unless I’m doing what I need to do — taking care of myself, being real, being open, getting it out, taking all the steps to make myself whole.”

“If it wasn’t for music I’d be dead,” he added. “One hundred percent.”

Chester Charles Bennington was born on March 20, 1976, in Phoenix, the youngest of four children. His mother was a nurse and his father a local police detective prone to pulling double shifts. Mr. Bennington described his childhood as unhappy, citing his parents’ divorce when he was 11 and frequent molestation by an older friend, beginning when Mr. Bennington was “about 7 or 8” and continuing until he was 13.

“It destroyed my self-confidence,” he said of the abuse in an interview with Kerrang! magazine in 2008. “Like most people, I was too afraid to say anything. I didn’t want people to think I was gay or that I was lying. It was a horrible experience.”

Mr. Bennington found solace in writing angst-filled poetry, in drawing and eventually in music; he cited Stone Temple Pilots and Depeche Mode as two of his earliest influences. As a teenager, he started his first band, Grey Daze, and gained something of a local following in the wake of the grunge explosion.

At 23, Mr. Bennington was married and working in an unfulfilling job when a music industry acquaintance sent him a demo by the band Xero, featuring Mr. Shinoda, a California rapper and songwriter interested in mixing hip-hop and rock sounds.

“I never pretended I could carry the vocals on my own,” Mr. Shinoda told Kerrang! “I had these great melodies in my head, and I couldn’t get them across. I wanted to find someone who could do them justice.”

After he auditioned an array of vocalists, he gave the job to Mr. Bennington, who had already recorded himself singing over the band’s early work. Together they became Linkin Park.

“Hybrid Theory” was released by Warner Bros. Records on Oct. 24, 2000, at the peak of the teen-pop mania fueled by Britney Spears and ’N Sync. Despite its rougher edges, the album’s raw emotion and radio-ready hooks found a mass audience — and a fair amount of critical derision — as part of the growing nu-metal boom led by acts like Korn and Limp Bizkit.

Mr. Bennington’s worldview could be bleak and his lyrics self-lacerating, but his honesty and the steeliness of his vocals on tender subjects bred fierce loyalty in the band’s listeners.

Though the band was popular among the headbangers of Ozzfest and the annual “Family Values” tour, it never shied from its pop sensibilities, as Mr. Bennington shifted easily between belting and growling. “In the End,” with his soaring chorus, reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2001.

Linkin Park pushed even further into the rap and pop realms on its 2003 follow-up, “Meteora,” which sold four million copies. The band even collaborated with Jay-Z on the platinum mash-up album “Collision Course” the next year. The band’s latest album, “One More Light,” features Pusha T and the grime rapper Stormzy and uses songwriters who have written for Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez.

Mr. Bennington said that his sobriety had faltered throughout his rise to fame, pointing to his divorce in 2005 as a catalyst for his drinking. In a radio interview last year, he recalled going to counseling with other band members in 2006.

“I knew that I had a drinking problem, a drug problem, and that parts of my personal life were crazy,” he said, “but I didn’t realize how much that was affecting the people around me until I got a good dose of ‘Here’s-what-you’re-really-like.’ ”

Mr. Bennington married Talinda Bentley, a schoolteacher and former model, in 2006. In a Wired article the next year, he revealed that he and his wife had been victims of an aggressive cyberstalker who had gained access to everything from their Social Security numbers to their social plans. The experience was deeply unsettling, leading Mr. Bennington, who was famously open and available to his fans, to withdraw.

“It sparks the sort of anger you don’t normally experience,” he told Wired. (Devon Townsend, the woman who had tormented Mr. Bennington and his family, was sentenced to two years in prison in 2008.)

In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children.

Despite his years of turmoil, Mr. Bennington was optimistic in interviews during the lead-up to the new Linkin Park album this year.

“Where I’m at right now in 2017 is as far on the opposite side of the scale to where I was at this time in 2015,” he told Rock Sound. “I literally hated life and I was like, ‘I don’t want to have feelings.’ And now I’m like, ‘Bring it on!’ ”

Incometax - News24in7

With less than 10 days left to the deadline of July 31 for filing income tax returns (ITR), most people have started filing their ITR. An ITR after being filed has to be verified by the assessee.

As per the existing tax laws, a return filed by the taxpayer is not valid until it is verified as filed by the concerned assessee. A taxpayer can verify his/her return either electronically using E-Verification Code (EVC) using any one of multiple options or physically.

In case of e-filing taxpayers have the option to e-verify their respective returns at the time of uploading or after uploading. In case of an already-uploaded return, taxpayers can e-verify the same by clicking on the “e-Verify Return” option under the ‘My Account’ tab after logging into the e-filing website. Physical verification method can be used only after filing the return.

Under the ‘e-verify return’ option, a taxpayer will be shown three alternatives to verify their returns.

  1. I already have an EVC to e-verify my return.
  2. I do not have an EVC and I would like to generate EVC to verify my return.
  3. To verify your returns using Aadhaar OT

If you’re using Aadhaar OTP method, your mobile number must be linked to your Aadhaar. In this process a, OTP is generated and sent to your registered mobile number. Enter the OTP in the text box provided and click on submit. Success page will be displayed. It is important to remember that Aadhaar OTP is valid for 30 minutes only.

If you do not have EVC or your mobile number is not linked to aadhaar, then you can choose option 2 mentioned above. EVC can be generated by clicking on ‘Generate EVC’ option under ‘My Account Tab’. Four options to verify your ITR will appear. An Individual can choose any of the following method to verify it.

Using Electronic methods
You can use any one of the following four methods to verify your ITR electronically apart from Aadhaar OTP. Once you have verify it.

Using Electronic methods
You can use any one of the following four methods to verify your ITR electronically apart from Aadhaar OTP. Once you have verified it electronically you are not required to send the physical ITR-V copy to Bengaluru.

(a) Using One Time Password (OTP): You can verify your ITR by receiving an OTP on your registered mobile number and e-mail ID. OTP is a 10 digit alphanumeric code which can be generated through the income tax department’s e-Filing portal and is valid for 72 hours.

This OTP can be used only if your gross Income minus deduction is less than or equal to Rs 5 lakh. And/or, refund/demand is less than or equal to 100. This is first option to that appears under the ‘Generate EVC’ option. Click on ‘Generate e-filing OTP’. The OTP will be you’re your email id.

(b) Generating EVC using net-banking: You can also verify your return by using the net-banking facility of your bank account. Log-in to your net banking account and click on tab related to income tax filing. Select the e-verify option and you will be redirected to e-filing website.

Once logged in to the income tax e-filing website, click on the ‘My Account’ to generate the EVC. A 10-digit alpha-numeric code will be sent to your email and mobile number which is valid for 72 hours. Now, click on ‘e-verify’ option in ‘My Account’ tab to verify your returns using option 1 ‘I have EVC already’.

(c) Receiving EVC by using bank account based validation system: To use this method you must first pre-validate your bank account. You can pre-validate your bank account through the profile settings menu in your e-filing account. You will be required to enter details such as bank name, account number, IFSC and mobile number.

Pre-validation will be successfully completed only if your PAN and name match with bank account records. You must enter the mobile number which is linked to that bank account. Once these details are confirmed and validated by the bank then only you can generate EVC using this option. You will receive the code on the mobile number mentioned by you. Currently, only 12 banks are providing this facility. You must ensure that your bank is in the list before using this option. No change of mobile number or email as mentioned above will be permissible without revalidation of the bank.

(d) Verifying returns through Demat Account Number: This method is similar to bank account based validation. This method was launched earlier but has become functionally usable starting from this assessment year. To use this method for verifying your tax returns, your must also first validate your Demat account in the profile settings menu.

You will be required to select your depository and enter both mobile number and email id. Once the details (PAN, mobile number and email id) mentioned by you is confirmed and validated by the depository then you can use this option to generate the code. Here too, no change of mobile number or email id will be permitted without revalidation with the depository.

Using Physical Method (by sending ITR-V/Acknowledgement receipt)
If the taxpayer is not able to e-verify his return because of any reason or is not comfortable in using the electronic verification mode, then he/she can download the ITR-V also known as acknowledgement receipt. He needs to sign it and send it to CPC through post. This ITR-V should reach CPC within 120 days from the date of upload of the return for the return to be treated as valid.

  1. ITR-V is a one-page document which you need to sign in blue ink and send via ordinary post or speed post. You cannot courier the ITR-V.
  2. ITR-V is a password protected document which can be downloaded from your account on the e-filing website under the ‘View Returns/Form’ on the ‘Dashboard’. This ITR-V is auto-generated after you successfully upload/e-file your income tax return. Password to open ITR-V is your PAN number in lower letters along with your date of birth (DOB). If your PAN is “AAAPA1111F” and DOB is 01/01/1975, then your password will be “aaapa1111f01011975”.
  3. You are not required to send any supporting document along with the ITR-V. Just send the one page signed ITR-V.
  4. When your duly signed ITR-V is received and entered in the records at CPC, you will receive an email on your registered email ID that the ITR-V has been received and your return has been verified. Processing of your return will only start after verification.
  5. Address of CPC Bangalore for speed post: ‘CPC, Post Box No – 1, Electronic City Post Office, Bangalore – 560100, Karnataka, India’.

Note: Not all assessee can use the e-verification option to verify their returns. Some assesses are required to verify their returns by using the ‘Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)’. Such assesses are the individuals or HUF using ITR 3 for the FY 2016-17 (ITR 4 for the FY 2015-16) to file their tax returns and whose accounts are required to be audited under section 44AB. Once returns are filed using DSC method, they are not required for further verification as they are digitally signed by the taxpayer.

Manchester attack: CCTV shows bomber before arena blast

Salman Abedi

CCTV images showing suicide bomber Salman Abedi on the night he attacked the Manchester Arena killing 22 people have been been released by police.

Fourteen locations are being searched and 12 men are in custody on suspicion of terror offences.

Abedi’s identity was known within two hours of Monday’s attack, police said.
On Sunday, police carried out a search in Manchester’s Moss Side. Separately, a 25-year-old man was arrested in the Old Trafford area of the city.

The UK threat level has been reduced from critical to severe and soldiers deployed to support the police will be gradually withdrawn from Monday night.

Prime Minister Theresa May made the announcement after leading a meeting of the government’s emergency committee Cobra on Saturday morning.

Armed police continue to guard hundreds of events across the UK over the bank holiday weekend.

Wembley was one of the venues with increased security this weekend

Hundreds of police were on duty as 50,000 fans attended The Courteeners concert at Old Trafford cricket ground – the first major music event in the city since the bombing.

Additional security measures will be in place for Sunday’s Great Manchester Run, where tens of thousands of runners are expected to participate, including Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham.

Other major events on Sunday include the League Two play-off final at Wembley and the second day of Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Hull.

Mrs May said significant activity by the police during the last 24 hours had led to the threat being reduced.

  • Manchester attack: Who were the victims?
  • What we know about bomber Salman Abedi
  • Minute’s silence held at Radio 1’s Big Weekend

It is unclear where the newly released images of Abedi were taken and from what time on Monday evening.

Greater Manchester Police have made an appeal to the public for information about the bomber’s movements since 18 May, when he returned to the UK.

Police said the investigation – which is “making good progress” – has around 1,000 people working on it and hundreds more officers involved in the security across Greater Manchester.

Officers said they arrested 14 people in Greater Manchester, Warwickshire and Merseyside – but a woman and a 16-year-old boy were later released without charge.

Abedi’s city centre flat was one of the last places he went – and where he may have made the final touches to his explosive device – before going to the arena, police have said.

On Saturday police raided a property in the Moss Side area of Manchester

Seven children were among those who died when the Manchester-born 22-year-old detonated the bomb on Monday night, at the end of a concert by US singer Ariana Grande.

A vigil has been announced for 29-year-old victim Martyn Hett, which will take place at Heaton Moor Park in Stockport on Sunday evening.

And the family of student Georgina Callander, from Lancashire, have said she was “as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside, with a smile that was never ending. She always had big hugs for everyone and her life was blooming like the flowers she loved”.

Georgina Callander’s family issued a tribute to their daughter

In a statement issued through Greater Manchester Police, they said her life was “taken away after 18 short years by evil, evil men prepared to ruin lives and destroy families, for what?”

They added: “I wish I could say that Georgina is one of the last to die in this way but unless our government opens its eyes we know we are only another in a long line of parents on a list that continues to grow.”

A total of 18 warrants have been carried out mainly across Greater Manchester since Monday.

On Saturday, officers used an explosive device to gain entry to a property in the Cheetham Hill area of Manchester, where two men were arrested.
A joint statement from Chief Constable Ian Hopkins and Neil Basu, senior national co-ordinator from UK Counter Terrorism Policing, said: “This is still a live investigation which is not slowing down.

Our priorities are to understand the run up to this terrible event and to understand if more people were involved in planning this attack.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the anti-terrorist hotline on 0800 789321. You can email images or footage that might be of assistance to ukpoliceimageappeal.co.uk.

5 things you will understand if your passion becomes your job

imagesIt is a usual Monday morning. The clock strikes seven. Your alarm clock acts like the hostel’s old matron who just cannot see you sleep peacefully. Like most of the working population, you want to strangle that tiny little thing to death. You wake up and stare at the wall. You contemplate if you really need the job. This is a common morning scenario when you do not like your job. But, what happens when you have a job that you are passionate about? Let us see:

1) You do not need the snooze button

Waking up early is a task. For young adults who love to party after work, it gets even harder. But if you have a job that you are passionate about, you happily turn into an early bird. You cannot wait to get started on the day. Just like schooldays, when you would not sleep the night before for fear of missing the picnic! When the alarm goes off, you get going.

2) Goodbye Monday morning blues

For people who are passionate about their work, the Monday morning blues is an alien concept. You long to get back to work on a Monday morning. You tend to be as excited to go to work as one would be while going on the last day of the week. That is the magic of embracing your passion.

3) Overtime? Bring it on!

You fail to understand why your friends whine about putting in extra hours at work. You are almost unaffected by the clock hands. You do not mind working over the weekends either. In fact, you can happily plan your weekend around your work.

4) You have a clear career goal

Building a career is never easy. Yet, there are people who do it, for money or for an intangible, better future. But you do not have to worry much. You know what you want to do in life; you have a clear goal. There is no two ways about it. You invest all your time and effort in achieving this goal.

5) Honing skills

If you are passionate about your job, you find all the ways possible to grow and become better. So, there’s a good chance you are constantly on the lookout for new skills and knowledge. No one has to tell you to take new courses or learn new concepts. You are quite self-motivated in this case.

You spend around nine hours at work every day. To be productive, it is important that you enjoy what you do in those hours. This becomes possible when your passion becomes your job.

10 Bollywood stars who committed fashion crimes

  • Sonam Kapoor

sonam-kapoor

We don’t, even in the worst of our nightmares, envision Sonam to make a fashion blunder. But the fashionista, who is always a step ahead of every actress in the industry, did take a step or two in the wrong direction and picked this absurd of a dress for Stardust Awards 2015.

  • Vidya Balan

vidya-balan

We have been a fan of Vidya Balan’s Rekha-esque looks, and we would rather her be in those heavy sarees for she hasn’t seen the best of time experimenting with fashion. But then again, only Vidya Balan can drape a Sabyasachi creation and end up looking like a perfect airhostess, employed at the Indian Airlines, because Kingfisher simply won’t allow a blouse that loose even on their passengers.

  • Ekta Kapoor

ektakapoor

Now I am not the one that suffers from cleavage-o-phobia in the name of sanskar and sabyata and other heavy words from the Hindi dictionary. However, I am genuinely concerned about Ekta Kapoor’s bosom here, struggling for freedom as they appear tortured in that dress clearly a size too small for her bounty. I hope the queen of soap opera was able to inhale and exhale without much of a trouble in that specimen of dress.

  • Neha Dhupia

neha-dhupia

Emulating Hollywood’s best looks is a time tested strategy resorted to by most of the Bollywood actresses and it has paid off pretty well. That however doesn’t translate to one recreating any look from the far west. For example, here we have Neha Dhupia channeling her inner Rihanna in Filmfare Fashion Awards. Even the ‘Work’ singer wasn’t spared of some harsh criticism for this over-the-top tiered dress, not sure what miracle Neha Dhupia was expecting.

  • Kajol

kajol

All we are saying is, the next time Kajol chooses to go with another of her right-there-in-your-face looks, we would appreciate if she gets blinders for her audience. We aren’t really calling out the brightness of her outfit, but all these color thrown together – I mean come ‘on, even a rainbow would need therapy having witnessed this.

  • Rani Mukherjee

rani-mukherjee

Maybe, just maybe, Rani mistook Karan Johar’s 40th birthday bash for a slumber party, or perhaps she was planning ahead in case she crashed after too much whiskey – for there is no other explanation of her rolling up in a fancy nighty to the venue.

  • Parineeti Chopra

parineeti-chopra

But then we look at Parineeti from the same evening and wonder if the very theme of K.Jo’s 40th birthday bash was – Lets all Eff Fashion, and it was perfect for the Sudhh Desi Romance star to slip into some Suddh Desi Embarrassment.

  • Sonakshi Sinha

sonakshi-sinha

Another talented actress, with not much of a fashion foresightedness. But then, don’t these rich celebs appoint stylists to dress them up? By the looks of it, we can surmise, Sonakshi’s stylist hates her guts. I hope she got fired after dressing the actress up like a cheap award from a 3rd grade committee.

  • Mallika Sherawat

mallika-sherawat

I find myself in short of words to report on this monstrosity, Mallika SherawatMallika Sherawat chose as an attire to a Hollywood Red Carpet event. She got lucky, she wasn’t book on account of being an alien and then dissected and experimented on.

  • Sonam Kapoor

sonam-kapoor-1

The Khoobsurat actress makes a second appearance on our list wearing this, what we call, animal print over load. I don’t see this hideous dress as a breakthrough in fashion on planet earth anytime soon. Maybe some out of the world trend, we are yet to learnt of.
