Mercedes-Benz launches CLA 45 AMG

New Delhi: Mercedes-Benz on Tuesday launched the CLA 45 AMG in India. The newest member of the AMG Performance Brand was launched by Eberhard Kern, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India at Buddh International Circuit.

The CLA 45 AMG is priced at Rs 68.50 lakh ex-showroom Delhi and will be available for sales across all Mercedes-Benz India dealerships across India.

Exterior styling and design

The compact performance sedan with its new dynamic styling combines the sculptural forms with AMG’s hallmark features. The CLA 45 AMG boasts the sporty AMG style, with the “twin blade” radiator grille encompassing the central Three Pointed Star. Three distinct openings in the front fascia enable an effective flow of air to the cooling modules; the outer black flics further optimise the air ducting. The side view features lines that blend perfectly with the side sill panels and the inserts are in matt titanium grey. The CLA 45 AMG features 18-inch 5-spoke light-alloy wheels in titanium grey finish.

The distinctive AMG body styling ensures a dynamic appearance from any angle the car is viewed from. Interiors

The interiors of the CLA 45 AMG greet you with an AMG start-up screen on the centrally positioned TFT colour display. Engine and Transmission

The newly developed award winning AMG 2.0-litre turbo engine is the most powerful four-cylinder series-production engine in the world. A maximum output of 265 kW and up to 450 Nm of torque are unmatched by any other mass-produced turbocharged four-cylinder engine worldwide. The high output and torque coupled with the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive fitted as standard make for extremely dynamic performance: the CLA 45 AMG complete the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and have a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited).

The CLA 45 AMG’s AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission transfers the engine power to all the four wheels. The dual clutch transmission is flange-mounted on the transversely installed AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine and features seven gears, three modes, a double-declutching function and RACE START function which can be activated by pulling on both shift paddles simultaneously, thus providing extremely fast sprints with no interruption of tractive power resulting in optimum acceleration.

With an independently developed AMG front and rear axle, the AMG sports suspension of the CLA 45 AMG boasts the ideal attributes for fast cornering speeds and agile handling. All of the components are matched to provide high lateral acceleration and a reduced tendency to roll. The AMG sports suspension with specifically tuned spring/damper units and larger anti-roll bars provides for high lateral acceleration and a reduced rolling tendency in fast double bends.

Hands on with the Audi A3 with Android Auto

Google wants to be everywhere. It’s on your desktop, in your pocket, on your wrist and now in your car. Well maybe not your current car. But possibly your next car.

At today’s Google I/O developer event, the search giant showed off Android Auto. Like Apple’s Car Play, the feature lets you make calls, control and listen to your music, and get you where you’re going all without having to grab your phone and potentially put your life and the lives of others in danger.

We got a quick demo of Android Auto in a red Audi A3 on the second floor of Moscone West. While a giant screen in the foreground played scenes of cars driving along worlds from around the world, we were presented with the system.

Google wants you to make sure that the system doesn’t want you to read. Instead of visual cues or text of what you’re asking for, a voice gives you a voice cue. Ask the car to navigate to Fresno, CA and the car will respond, “Navigating to Fresno, CA.” It’s pretty slick but if the car has an issue understanding what you’re saying or its reply is phonetically correct but not technically correct you could end up at the wrong location.

Still, anything that keeps your phone out of your hand and your eyes on the road is great. The audio app integration is great. In addition to Google Music, there are 10 apps ready to go including Spotify, Pandora and MLB At Bat. While the main screen looks the same with a color skin to match the app, each app can add its own categories to the navigation. You can also make voice calls and reply to texts with you voice.

The system is part of the Open Automotive Alliance. In addition to the Audi, there was a Kia with the system installed. Cars from Mazda, Ford, Subaru, Volkswagen and others should be on the road in the future. Until then, keep your phone in your bag while you drive.

Auto Expo 2014 preview

The 2012 edition, the biggest one so far, highlighted the shortcomings of Pragati Maidan as a venue – poorly maintained infrastructure, badly managed press days, ineffective crowd management and massive traffic snarls outside.

Although some may feel that the new venue is too far away from the main city, a trip to the new premises shows plenty of promise. The India Expo Centre is situated at the end of the six-lane Greater Noida Expressway, which means getting there is much easier than the distance suggests because of the lack of traffic on the well-laid route.

The Auto Expo 2014 venue is spread over 58 acres, and boasts eight huge exhibition halls. While it pales in comparison to Pragati Maidan in terms of size, the comforting aspect is that only the Motor Show with the automobile manufacturers will be moving to the new location. The Component Show will continue to take place at Pragati Maidan.

The organizers have worked on ironing out the shortcomings of last year’s show. Plus, since the venue has been constructed quite recently, there’s none of those crumbling walls that you see at Pragati Maidan – the new venue is much better equipped to handle the sheer volume of manufacturers, their displays and the huge number of visitors.

Another difference is that the Expo is being held a month later than usual, in February, which should provide visitors some relief from the harsh Delhi winter. Another benefit is that it will no longer clash with the Detroit motor show held in January, so it’s less of an inconvenience to some international carmakers and their executives. The show will be open to the public from February 7-11, from 1pm on weekdays and from 10am on the weekend. Tickets are available online on bookmyshow.com.
