Budget 2017: Cash No Longer Valid For Payments Above Rs 3 Lakh

Digital payments in India are set to get a big boost with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, in his Budget 2017 speech, announcing that cash will be no longer allowed for transactions of more than Rs 3 lakh.

Budget 2017 year on cube with pencil and clockThe government also proposed a new payments regulator to be set up within the Reserve Bank of India. Jaitley said the government is also working to quickly roll out the recommendations put forward by a committee of chief ministers on digital transactions.
Arun Jaitley, Finance Minister In His Budget Speech To begin with, it is proposed to create a payment regulatory board in the Reserve Bank of India by replacing the existing board of regulations and supervision of payment systems. As we move faster to the path of digital and cheque payments, it is necessary to ensure that payees of dishonoured cheques are able to realise their payments. Therefore, the government is considering the option of amending the Negotiable Instruments Act suitably.

While the government brings about structural changes in payment regulation, it is also promoting digital transactions by proposing and potentially mandating petrol pumps, fertiliser depots, hospitals and colleges to have the option of accepting digital payments, including from the BHIM app.

Jaitley also announced two new schemes targeted at increasing the number of digital transactions through its flagship BHIM app — a referral bonus scheme for individuals and a cash-back scheme for merchants.

Budget 2017 set a target of 2,500 crore digital transactions in the upcoming financial year through various modes such as UPI, Aadhaar Pay and plastic cards.

While the government is yet to roll out Aadhaa- based payment systems — which come with their set of safety concerns — Jaitley said that 20 lakh Aadhaar enabled point-of-sale machines will be rolled out by September 2017.

According to Reserve Bank of India data, the value of debit card transactions at point of sale (PoS) terminals has grown by over 63 percent between 2012 and 2015. Credit card transactions at PoS terminals has grown 54 percent.

However, estimates suggest that 90% of transactions by value are still being carried out in cash in the country. This is set to change with the government’s latest push for digital payments post demonetisation.

In its attempt to boost use of cards, wallets and unified payments interface, the government has announced that banks will deploy 10 lakh additional PoS machines by March 2017 which will be complemented by the launch of Aadhaar Pay, which obviates the need of having a phone, debit card or passwords.

Virat Kohli reveals the best cricketing advice he received came from Sachin Tendulkar

news24in7

The batting maestro played alongside Kohli towards the end of his career

What’s the story?

Newly-appointed Indian limited-overs captain Virat Kohli revealed that the best cricketing advice that he has got so far came from his hero Sachin Tendulkar. MS Dhoni’s decision to step down as limited-overs captain has meant the 28-year-old has been appointed as captain of the Indian team across all formats.

Kohli, who led the U-19 side to victory in the 2008 U-19 World Cup will now captain India in all formats beginning from the ODI series against England, which begins on January 15 at Pune. Speaking to Mandira Bedi during a talk show, Kohli spoke about the advice he got from Sachin.

“When I approached him about my game, the advice I got from was to believe in your own game and believe in the way you want to prepare and do not follow someone and that helped and from that onwards, I was really comfortable,” the Indian captain said.

In case you didn’t know…

Ever since he was given the Indian limited-overs captaincy, Virat Kohli has had a mixed bag off the field. While he was appointed brand ambassador of Gionee, following in the footsteps of Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt, he was removed from his post as brand ambassaor of Adidas as the sportswear manufacturing giant chose against renewing his contract.

The heart of the matter

The 28-year-old had a year to remember in 2016 as he scored over 2,500 runs, finished as the leading run-scorer in the calendar year and almost broke Rahul Dravid’s record of most runs in a calendar year by an Indian batsman.

One of the reasons why he has been at home across all formats has been his incredible ability to adapt and change gears depending on the situation and format. From being a player who doesn’t hit the ball in the air as a conscious effort in Tests to one that clears the ropes with ease, Kohli has certainly created his own unique style and followed Tendulkar’s advice.

Speaking about being given the captaincy across all formats, Kohli admitted that it was an honour that he was thought of as worthy of taking over from MS Dhoni. While he admitted that captaincy didn’t come as a surprise, he described the pressure as fun and not stressful.

What next?

After captaining the Indian team to a 4-0 series win over England in the Test series, Virat Kohli will hope to continue his stellar run in the shorter formats in the ODI series against England that begins on January 15. It will be interesting to see how the Indian team perform under Kohli’s leadership in the shorter formats.

Sportskeeda’s take

It certainly looks as though Kohli has taken Tendulkar’s advice to heart as he has created a name of himself with his unique style of batting, one which brought him over 2,500 runs in 2016 and established him as one of the stars of the modern game across all formats.

Virat will win more games as captain than I ever did: Dhoni

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, on Friday, addressed the media for the first time after stepping down as India’s ODI skipper. Dhoni raised the curtains on why he finally chose to hand over the batons to Virat Kohli in limited-overs cricket.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni with Virat Kohli

Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be featuring in the first ODI against England to be played on January 15 at Pune.

The 35-year-old batsman further revealed that the South Africa series in 2015 was, in his mind, last as limited overs skipper.

Here are the highlights from his conference:

  • Dhoni doesn’t believe in split captaincy–having two different captains for Tests and ODIs.
  • Dhoni said that to captain a side in Tests is more difficult than captaining a side in limited overs.
  • ‘Virat Kohli is ready to captain the limited overs side.’
  • He will do all he can to help Kohli with his captaincy and keep a close eye on the field positioning.
  • ‘It made no sense for me to continue. People even questioned me when I quit midway through the Test series in Australia. Sometimes you need to look at the bigger picture.’
  • ‘In my mind, the series in India against South Africa was my last. After that it was pretty easy to judge why I went to Zimbabwe. Because of that finally, I told BCCI officially I won’t be captaining anymore.’
  • Dhoni spoke about how his role as a batsman changed over the years because he was needed down the order.
  • The erstwhile Indian captain said that he would have liked to bat at No.4 and could have scored more runs. He always considered that the team’s need is greater than his wishes.
  • Dhoni said as captain his aim was always to finish off the games.
  • Dhoni thinks that the present Indian team has the potential to win games everywhere and the pool of fast bowlers can do well in any condition.
  • ‘From the beginning of his career he wanted to learn and there was a hunger to win matches. He wanted to be in the middle of it all.’
  • According to Dhoni, Virat Kohli will win more games as captain than he did.
  • Dhoni said that this team could be the most successful Indian team ever and rewrite history.

Dhoni, who led India for over nine years, also asserted that wicketkeeper of any team is always a vice-captain, irrespective of whether he is announced vice-captain or not.

The wicket-keeper batsman, who made his ODI debut in December 2003 against Bangladesh in Chittagong, also said a lot of things did change since the time he took over the captaincy in 2007 to now.

“The requirement of the team has changed as well. No fixed batting order for me. The guys at the top did remarkably. I will change my role as per the responsibilities given to me. Depending on where I am batting, I will bat accordingly,” Dhoni said.

Contact lenses ‘alter eye bacteria’

Contact lenses may increase the risk of eye infections by altering the make-up of bacteria living on the eyeball, research has shown.

Researchers found contact lenses appeared to transfer bugs from the skin to the eye, upsetting the bacterial ecosystem and triggering infections

Researchers found contact lenses appeared to transfer bugs from the skin to the eye, upsetting the bacterial ecosystem and triggering infections

Researchers found the lenses appeared to transfer bugs from the skin to the eye, upsetting the bacterial ecosystem and triggering infections and inflammation.

Lead scientist Dr Maria Gloria Dominguez-Bello, from NYU Langone Medical Centre in New York City, said: “Our research clearly shows that putting a foreign object, such as a contact lens, on the eye is not a neutral act.

“These findings should help scientists better understand the long-standing problem of why contact-lens wearers are more prone to eye infections than non-lens wearers.” The researchers took hundreds of swabs of various parts of the eyes of nine contact lens wearers and 11 participants who did not wear contact lenses.

They found that in both groups the eye surface, or conjunctiva, harboured a more diverse range of bacteria than the skin directly beneath the eye.

Three times the usual proportion of three types of bugs, Methylobacterium, Lactobacillus, Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas, were identified on the eyeballs of contact lens wearers.

The conjunctival “microbiome”, or microbial ecosystem, of lens wearers turned out to be more like that of the skin than of the eye.

Dr Dominguez-Bello added: “What we hope our future experiments will show is whether these changes in the eye microbiome of lens wearers are due to fingers touching the eye, or from the lens’s direct pressure affecting and altering the immune system in the eye and what bacteria are suppressed or are allowed to thrive.”
The findings were presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Microbiology in New Orleans.

Co-investigator Professor Jack Dodick, chair of opthalmology at NYU Langone, said: “There has been an increase in the prevalence of corneal ulcers following the introduction of soft contact lenses in the 1970s. A common pathogen implicated has been Pseudomonas.

“This study suggests that because the offending organisms seem to emanate from the skin, greater attention should be directed to eyelid and hand hygiene to decrease the incidence of this serious occurrence.” Some 5,245 distinct bacterial strains and subtypes were identified in the eyes of lens wearers and 5,592 strains in the eyes of non-lens wearers.

Surprisingly, the research showed that more Staphylococcus bacteria – which are linked to eye infections and are more prominent on the skin – were found in the eyes of non-lens wearers. The scientists cannot yet provide an explanation for this result.

The best foods to eat before and after workouts to make it all worth it

Mitalee Doshi, Founder of Oomph Nutrition tells us what to eat before and after workouts.

News24in7

The best foods to eat before and after workouts to make it all worth it

Achieving optimal results by a workout depends on certain aspects – the most important of them is one’s diet. What you eat before (and if needed, during) your workout is crucial for fuelling the workout itself and is responsible for muscle building. What you eat after your workout ensures that your body has all of the supplies it needs in order to recover, adapt and improve. The fluids and food you have before/during/after workout go a long way towards making sure that your exercise has the best impact on your health. Mitalee Doshi, Founder of Oomph Nutrition tells us what to eat before and after workouts.

Pre-workout nutrition

One should never hit the gym on an empty stomach. Your pre workout meal is the meal that plays the largest role in supplying your body with everything it will need to ensure optimal performance during your workout.

Carbohydrates are essential for slow and steady energy release throughout the workout. It tops up your fuel levels and boosts your brain power and concentration for the session. Protein is required to build and maintain muscles and for healthy blood cells as they deliver nutrients and oxygen to working muscles. So make sure your meal has these foods. You can also go for lauki juice instead of protein shake post workout.

Sources of carbohydrates

Foods rich in complex carbohydrates, such as wholegrain pasta, roti, oats, fruits, vegetables and bread are the best sources of energy that can help you start your workout well, and keep at it without experiencing dizziness. They slowly release glucose in the bloodstream. These 5 carbs can actually help you lose weight.

Sources of proteins

Make sure you buy good quality protein which digests slowly, releasing amino acids (building blocks) into the bloodstream. Good sources are paneer, eggs, chicken, fish, casein supplement. You may also want to know if whey protein has any dangerous side effects.

Meals before a workout can be oats / muesli and milk or egg omelets with bread or paneer bhurji with roti or grilled chicken sandwich. Meal before cardio can be a fruit and milk or fruit and nuts.

Timing of the meal

It should be about 45 minutes prior to exercise. This allows body enough time to digest and begin nutrient absorption. The individual should not feel heavy or nauseous while under the pressure of workout. Cardiovascular training should be performed at a gap of 2- 2 ½ hours after the last meal.

Post workout nutrition

Gaining strength and muscle doesn’t occur while you workout but after, during the recovery stage. That is why post workout nutrition holds great importance. After your workout, you must try to eat a ‘recovery meal’ within one hour if possible. Your muscles are weaker after the training session because they have been torn down and have been damaged by an intense workout, so this meal is all about refuelling what you’ve lost and providing the raw materials needed for healing.

During the workout, the body has endured drop in blood glucose levels due to rapid use of glucose to fuel the workout, muscle breakdown due to overload and free radical attack due to high energy use and increase in stress levels. The sooner you start refueling your body, the better off you’ll be. Research shows that your body’s ability to refill muscle stores is higher within one hour after your workout. So make sure you eat the following.

Carbohydrates

Instant energy is required to replenish diminished glucose stores. Glucose needs to be immediately supplied for instant absorption into the bloodstream. Alternatively, bananas or fruit juice can also be consumed. It should be taken immediately after the workout.

Proteins
It is essential to supply all amino acids in ample quantity for muscle repair. It should be of high quality and which quickly releases amino acids into the bloodstream. Good sources are whey or eggs. They should be consumed 10- 20 minutes after glucose. Consuming high-quality protein after exercise gives your muscles the fuel needed for both repair and for boosting growth. Here is a vegetarian diet plan for bodybuilders.

Vitamins

To fight free radicals, reduce muscle breakdown and to protect body tissues, antioxidants are required like vitamin A, C, E, zinc, selenium. The requirement for the antioxidants post workout is not met through food sources alone and thus it is essential to take supplements along with glucose.

Post cardio meal

The ideal post-workout meal consists of a blend of carbohydrates and protein. It can be 45 minutes after cardiovascular training. You can eat poha/ upma and curd or cereal and milk or a chicken sandwich.

Water

It’s important to drink fluids before, during and after your workout as it is great for rehydrating the cells. Without sufficient water during exercise, your body temperature can be extremely high, so it is very important to stay hydrated to cool your body down.

The American College of Sports Medicine recommends to follow these guidelines:

  • Drink roughly 2 to 3 cups (0.5 to 0.7l) of water two to three hours prior to your workout.
  • Drink about 1/2 to 1 cup (0.12 to 0.23l) of water every 15 to 20 minutes during your workout. You may need more depending on your size and if the weather is warmer.
  • Drink roughly 2 to 3 cups (0.5 to 0.7l) of water after your workout for every pound (0.5 kg) of weight you lose during the workout.
  • Water is generally the best way to replace lost fluids. But if you’re exercising for more than 60 minutes, use a sports drink. Sports drinks provide not only fluid, but carbohydrate and sodium.

They can also help in maintaining your body’s electrolyte balance and give you a bit more energy.

IAS officer death case: If truth has to come out, CBI probe crucial, says BJP

New Delhi, Mar. 19 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday said that a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is crucial in the death case of IAS officer D.K Ravi as the latter was fighting against vested interests.

“There are many questions that are arising in this matter as to wy such an officer took such an extreme step. IAS officer DK Ravi was fighting against vested interests and CBI inquiry important to bring out truth,” said party spokesperson Nalin Kohli.

Earlier on Wednesday, lawyers staged a protest demanding that the Karnataka Government to handover the probe into the officer’s death case to the CBI.

The Karnataka Government has, however, so far rejected the demand and asserted that the CID of the state police is capable of handling the investigation in the case.

The 2009 batch IAS officer, who was deputed as the Joint Commissioner of the state’s Commercial Taxes Department, was found mysteriously hanging by a fan in the bedroom of his private apartment in South Bengaluru’s Tavarekere earlier on Monday. (ANI)

Woman accused of cutting baby from pregnant woman’s womb

LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) — A 34-year-old woman was accused of stabbing a pregnant woman in the stomach and removing her baby, while the expectant mother visited her home to buy baby clothes advertised on Craigslist, Colorado authorities said.

Officers called to the residence Wednesday afternoon found the 26-year-old victim, who was seven months pregnant, stabbed and beaten, Longmont police Cmdr. Jeff Satur told the Daily Times-Call newspaper (http://bit.ly/1BzW1ZZ ).

She underwent surgery and is expected to recover, but the baby did not survive.

Satur said the suspect arrived at the hospital with the baby and told staff she had suffered a miscarriage.

The pregnant woman was at the home to buy baby clothes that were advertised on Craigslist.

“This is a tragic case for a mother right now,” Satur said. “She came by this house. She was attacked, and her baby was removed from her.”

Investigators have not released the names of the suspect and the pregnant woman but said they did not know each other.

The suspect was arrested at the hospital on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and child abuse-knowingly and recklessly resulting in death.

Boulder County District Attorney Stan Garnett said his office will consider what formal charges to file.
“The issues involving an unborn child are complicated under Colorado law,” he said. “In most circumstances, if a child was not actually born alive, then homicide charges are not possible.”
Police were getting a search warrant for the suspect’s home.

R.I.P. Google+?

Screen-Shot-2015-03-02-at-2.48.23-PM
Google’s Google+ social network, touted by some as a potential “Facebook killer” upon its 2011 release, could end up split into multiple parts.

“Just wanted to confirm that the rumors are true—I’m excited to be running Google’s Photos and Streams products!” Google Vice President Bradley Horowitz wrote on his Google+ page. “It’s important to me that these changes are properly understood to be positive improvements to both our products and how they reach users.”

While there’s no official word from Google on whether Google+ is headed for the digital chopping block, Horowitz’s posting suggests the service could undergo a significant rebranding in coming months. If so, “Photos” is a logical candidate for a standalone service. Over the past few years, Google+ has developed a reputation as a place where digital shutterbugs congregate to share images, so it seems logical that Google would double down on that aspect of things.

The second allusion in Horowitz’s posting, “Streams,” is much more ambiguous. It presumably refers to the activity/news streams that dominate the profiles of Google+ users, but it remains unclear how exactly Google will shift things around to emphasize this functionality.

At this month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Google Senior Vice President Sundar Pichai also told the audience that Hangouts, the popular communications platform that currently exists as part of Google+, might end up as a standalone product of some sort. “And we’re going to put more energy into it,” he said, according to The Verge. “We’re seeing good traction there and so we’ll work hard to get to the next stage.”

At least one thing is clear: Google+ will likely end up looking very different in the months and years ahead—if it even continues to exist under that name.
