‘Spine-tingling’ lost Bob Marley tapes restored after 40 years in a cellar

London concert recordings from 1970s were water damaged

A cache of lost Bob Marley recordings has been discovered after lying for more than 40 years in a damp London hotel basement.

The 13 reel-to-reel, analogue master tapes were discovered in cardboard box files in a run-down hotel in Kensal Rise, north-west London, the modest lodgings where Bob Marley and the Wailers stayed during their European tours in the mid-1970s.

The tapes – known as “the lost masters” among elements of Marley’s huge fanbase – were at first believed to be ruined beyond repair, largely through water damage. Yet after more than 12 months of painstaking work using the latest audio techniques, the master reels have been restored, with the sound quality of Marley – who died in 1981 but would have been 72 on Monday– described as enough to “send shivers down one’s spine”.

The tapes are the original live recordings of Marley’s concerts in London and Paris between 1974 and 1978, and feature some of his most famous tracks including No Woman No Cry, Jammin, Exodus and I Shot the Sheriff.

The concerts – at the Lyceum in London (1975), the Hammersmith Odeon (1976), the Rainbow, also in London (1977), and the Pavilion de Paris (1978) – were recorded live on the only mobile 24-track studio vehicle in the UK at the time, loaned out to Marley and the Wailers by the Rolling Stones.

The tapes were rescued from the rubbish by Marley fan and London businessman Joe Gatt, who had received a call from a friend saying he had found what appeared to be some old Marley tape recordings.

“He was doing a building refuse clearance that included some discarded two-inch tapes from the 1970s. I couldn’t just stand by and let these objects, damaged or not, be destroyed so I asked him not to throw them away,” Gatt said.

He passed the master recordings to business partner and jazz singer Louis Hoover, who regularly headlines at Ronnie Scott’s in London.

Hoover said: “I was speechless, to be honest. It was quite comical, looking back now, as Joe was so cool and matter of fact about rescuing these global artefacts that I actually had to stop the car to check that I had heard him correctly.

“When I saw the labels and footnotes on the tapes, I could not believe my eyes, but then I saw how severely water damaged they were. There was literally plasticised gunk oozing from every inch and, in truth, saving the sound quality of the recordings, looked like it was going to be a hopeless task.”

The tapes were handed to sound technician specialist Martin Nichols of White House studios in Weston-super-Mare, who said they would have been lost for ever if anyone had tried playing them in their decrepit condition.

“They really were in such an appalling condition they should have been binned, but I spent hours on hours, inch by inch, painstakingly cleaning all the gunge off until they were ready for a process called ‘baking’, to allow them to be played safely,” Nichols said.

He added: “The end result has really surprised me, because they are now in a digital format and are very high quality. It shows the original recordings were very professionally made. From the current find of 13 tapes, 10 were restored, two were blank and one was damaged beyond repair.”

When Hoover first heard the recordings, which cost around £25,000 to restore, he admits to being blown away. “It made the hair on the back of our necks stand up and genuine shivers ran up our spines with joy,” he said.

“The experience was comparable to, say, finding Van Gogh’s easel, paint pallet and paints in an old room somewhere, then Vincent emerges through a secret door to paint 26 of his finest masterpieces … purely for us.”

Internet download speed hits 1,83,501MBps in test

Scientists in the UK have achieved the "fastest ever" broadband speeds of 1.4 terabits per second.

Scientists in the UK have achieved the “fastest ever” broadband speeds of 1.4 terabits per second.

In a breakthrough, scientists in the UK have achieved the “fastest ever” broadband speeds of 1.4 terabits per second – enough to transmit 44 high-definition movies at once.

The joint test by British Telecom (BT) and French networking equipment company Alcatel-Lucent achieved the high speeds of 1.4 terabits per second, or 1,83,501MBps, on the existing fibre network in London.

The breakthrough is being seen as highly important for internet service providers (ISPs), as it means a greater amount of information can be sent through existing broadband infrastructure, reducing the need for costly upgrades.

There are faster methods of transmitting data – such as the use of complex laser technology – but this is the first test to achieve such high speeds in “real world” conditions, outside testing labs, ‘BBC News’ reported.

The test was conducted in October and November last year, on a line from BT Tower in central London and the company’s research campus near Ipswich.

Kevin Drury, optical marketing leader at Alcatel-Lucent, likened the development to reducing space between lanes on a busy motorway, enabling more lanes of traffic to flow through the same area.

He said flexibility meant some could be adapted to specific needs – like opening an extra lane during the morning rush hour.

In internet terms, this would mean, for example, streaming video would get a large, wide lane, while accessing standard web pages would need only a small part of the fibre’s capacity.

“Toddler” is 20 Years Old, and Forever Young, Due to Baffling Medical Condition

Brooke Greenberg may be 20 years old, but she remains forever trapped inside the body and mind of a toddler, due to a mystery medical condition that has baffled medical experts for years.

“From age one to four, Brooke changed. She got a little bit bigger,” explained her father, Howard, during the family’s appearance on Thursday’s “Katie” with Katie Couric. “But age four, four to five, she stopped.”

Since then, Brooke’s height and weight of 16 pounds and 20 inches have remained a constant. She wears diapers, is pushed in a stroller, gets fed through a feeding tube due to a too-small esophagus, and communicates like an infant would, estimates her mother Melanie.

“Like 6 months,” she explained on the show. “If she’s happy, she’ll giggle and laugh.”

Doctors have told Melanie and Howard, who live in Maryland, that there is no other known case like Brooke’s in the world. And at least one medical expert believes that Brooke’s condition could hold the key to the fountain of youth.

Here’s a woman 20 years old who has literally stopped aging,” explained Dr. Eric Schadt, director of the Icahn Institute for Genomics and Multi-Scale Biology at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York, who also appeared on the broadcast. He said he took an interest in Brooke’s case after years of her receiving no diagnosis from other doctors, and that her case could “blow a whole field of science wide open.”

In the mean time, the parents provide care to her day in and day out, and have watched their younger daughter, 17-year-old Carly, eclipse her older sister by developing normally over the years. They admit they have often felt isolated in their struggle.

It hasn’t been easy,” Melanie told Couric. “We don’t have anybody really to turn to, to tell us what to expect.” Doctors have no way to even determine how long Brooke may live.

Still, her parents say they take solace in the fact that she’s here now, and believe she does not need to be cured of anything.

If somebody knocked on the door right now and said, ‘It’s a guaranteed pill. Give this to Brooke and she’ll be fixed,’ well first I would say to him, ‘She’s not broken.’ And B, I would say, ‘Thank you, but no thank you,” Howard said in a video filmed for the “Katie” show.

To research Brooke’s condition, scientists are reading every single letter of the young woman’s DNA. “That would fill, like, 3,000 of the fifth Harry Potter books that my kids like. That’s how big her genome is,” Dr. Schadt explained, adding that, so far, scientists have put her genes in fruit flies to see if it helps them lives longer. He added that the Greenberg’s take solace in the fact Brooke has also helped with research into conditions including Alzheimer’s, heart disease and cancer.

“That,” he said, “is a pretty amazing gift to be able to give to humanity.”

Anonymous has declared cyber war against the embattled Syrian government just one day after the country sparked outrage by shutting down its citizens’ Internet access. As Network World reports, Anonymous has vowed to attack “all Web assets belonging to the Assad regime that are NOT hosted in Syria” in retaliation for the country’s suppression of its citizens’ digital communications.

Anonymous said that the Syrian government’s actions were particularly rash because it had “physically severed the fiber-optic and coaxial cables coming into Syria” which is “not damage that can be easily or quickly repaired.” The hacker collective said its first target will be a website belonging to Syria’s embassy in China.

UFO sightings inside Indian territory bordering China raise security concerns

Top security brass of the Indian government is battling a “mysterious” threat from the Chinese side these days: tennis ball-sized UFOs.

Hundreds of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) have been sighted inside the Indian territory bordering China in recent months, raising security concerns. The issue, initially dubbed a minor one, has turned serious as India prepares to raise it at the diplomatic levelwith China.

Sources said a meeting of the boundary coordination mechanism – a highlevel official mechanism set up by the two sides to ensure that the boundary incidents between their armed forces do not escalate – is being scheduled later this month where the issue of “luminous objects” will be at the centre of the discussion.

The Indian delegation will be led by Gautam Bambawale, the head of the China desk in the external affairs ministry, while China will be represented by its director general, department of boundary and oceanic affairs. Security officials from both sides will also participate in the meeting.

Highly placed sources said over 150 such incidents have been reported in the last three months and that India’s protests at the local border personnel meeting with the Chinese have met with a cursory denial.

The government’s decision to raise the ‘UFO ‘ issue at the diplomatic level follows a detailed report sought from the Defence Research and Development Organisation and the Indian Army, and a spectrum analyser to ascertain the objects.

Surprisingly, the radar could not detect these objects indicating that they were nonmetallic. Also, the spectrum analyser could not detect any signals emitted by them. The army also flew a reconnaissance drone in the direction of the floating objects, but it didn’t yield anything substantial.

“Earlier these reports coming from various sectors of the boundary were sketchy but now we have definite proof of these yellowish spheres coming from the Chinese side; and our concerns will be raised,” a source said.

According to the reports, in Ladakh sector, such an object was sighted in Thakung post on October 21 for around eight hours. It had an “intense continuous flash light.” Another incident was reported from Arunachal Pradesh’s Dichu area on October 19.

Earlier it was believed that the Chinese could be sending remote-controlled lanterns but that theory was shot down after an internal probe. Mail Today accessed a series of reports sent by the intelligence bureau, the army and the ITBP on the issue, which has been discussed at a high-level meeting on China in the Prime Minister’s Office.

Some of the top government officials suspect that these UFOs which appear to lift off from the Chinese side and traverse the sky for three to five hours before disappearing were high-intensity cameras. “We are worried that there may be a flare-up if the Indian troops decide to shoot these objects,” a source said.

5 lies all women tell

Women lie. Out of compulsion, to manipulate you, to manipulate the situation, to salvage the relationship, to willingly destroy the friendship, to be bitchy, to infuse some gossip and fun into an otherwise mundane life

No matter the reason, women lie. As do men, but for the purpose of this article we’ll just stick to talking about the fairer sex. And no, no lies will be mentioned here.
Here are five lies that ALL women tell and very few own up to:
 1. I am NOT mad at you
Lie. Lie. Lie. The moment she utters these words, the red flag, heck ALL the red flags you have, must go up. A woman only ever says this when she is fuming with wrath; when she is so angry with you that she wants to burn your sad soul and kick you right into hell. You’d be safe if she is mad at you than when she is not. So, if she isn’t mad at you, please do the needful and make sure she is absolutely mad at you.

2. You were Great!
If you *actually* were great, she wouldn’t necessarily say it. Instead she’d show you grateful she is. So if she tells you how great you were and raves and rants about it, chances are you were only but mediocre and she is just being nice.
3. Be honest, I can take it
This particularly statement is made after she asks you *that* question. The question being: Do I look fat in this?
It’s a trap. A big huge cage from which there is no escape. Any answer or no answer, you’re destined to die out of misery in that cage.
The truth is she cannot take your honesty and if you lie blatantly, she’ll catch you at it. So the trick here is to be moderate in your response; not too flowery, not too mean. Walk the tight-rope well and you might just manage to escape from the cage. PS: No living man has yet managed this feat.

4. I’m not jealous
In reality, she is jealous almost all the time. Jealous when you look at that girl walking by, jealous when you talk too much to your friend who is a girl. In all honesty, playful jealousy is fun, necessary even to keep the relationship going. So when she says she is not jealous, smile and kiss her cheek. Forget being jealous, she will just blush.

5. I never think of my ex
Everyone thinks of their ex. At some point or the other, we are driven back to times gone by because of a tune or a place or situation or a conversation. It’s okay if she thinks about her ex once in a while, because it is only normal to do so. And if she confesses to *never* thinking of her ex, I’d say something is wrong with her and that you need to assess what that is.
